What is the RTV2 Liquid Silicone Rubber?

Contents Menu

Liquid Silicone Rubber also called RTV2 Silicone , it is generally two-part silicone based joined together by catalyst. It cures at room temperature.

RTV2 silicone most commonly used for the reproduction of wax, concrete, epoxy resin, polyurethane resins, gypsum, plasters, PU resins, cements casting materials and so on.

Depending on the principle of vulcanization, liquid silicone rubber is divided into condensation cure silicone and platinum cure silicone.

Condensation silicone is cured at room temperature by curing agent (hardener). Platinum cure silicone is cured by platinum catalyst, it can be heated.

Operation method for Condensation cure silicone

The part A is silicone base, and part B is curing agent (hardener or catalyst). The mixing ratio of A to B component is normally 100:2 or 100:3. If you want the silicone to cure faster, you can add more curing agent, but not more than 5%, because the more curing  agent is added, the greater the shrinkage of the condensation cure silicone, which will lead to silicone mold size becomes smaller, so especially some manufacturers of precision products molds must pay attention to this point.

Operation method for Platinum cure silicone

The AB two-component platinum cure silicone is different from the condensation type, and the curing time is very much related to the temperature. The higher the temperature, the shorter the curing time. The mixing ratio of A and B component is normally 1:1 or 100:10.

The general operating time is about 30-60 minutes at room temperature at 25°C. After 30-60 minutes, the cross-linking reaction begins and no longer flows, and it takes 4-8 hours to cure completely. After 24hours , then the silicone molds can use for casting products.
