How to Make Mold with Silicone Rubber
1. Prepare the model
Make sure your original model is smooth and flawless. No matter how good the silicone is, any imperfections will show up in the final mold.
2. Build the frame
Place a frame around the model and seal any gaps to prevent the silicone from leaking. Make sure the model is fixed in place.
3. Measure and mix the silicone
Most silicone rubbers require two parts to be mixed: the silicone base and the catalyst. A typical ratio is 100 parts base to 2-3 parts catalyst. Use an electronic scale for accurate measurement and mix well to avoid air bubbles.
4. Pour in the silicone rubber
Slowly pour about 1/3 of the silicone rubber into the frame to cover all the details of the model. Then pour the remaining silicone on top.
5. Demouding
After the mold making silicone rubber has cured (usually 4-6 hours), carefully remove the model from the mold. Clean up any rough edges and leave the mould for 24 hours before use. Store in a cool, dry place.
